ARIA NOVAK PORTFOLIO

This project ignited a passion in me that I haven’t felt in quite some time. Using my resources as a physics student, I was able to study the intersection between both of my interests, physics and dance. This project meant a lot to me as it was the first time I was really able to research something I care about very deeply. Working with Dr. Hasz, I was able to create a presentation that can be altered depending on who my audience is. When making the presentation, I stumbled upon a question, who is my audience? In this case it was my physics peers but I wanted this project to mean just as much to the physics students as it does to dancers. |
You may be thinking that it is kind of a stretch to get physics students to care about the physics within dance if they have no interest in dance. Well, the nice thing about dance is that all you need is your body! And luckily, all my physics peers have a body. That being said, there is something for them to relate to which may increase the value of interest enough to keep them engaged since the underlying principle is built off of physics concepts. Understanding movement and feeling it in our bodies is something that is very important to dancers and I stress to non-dancers that understanding your movement, as well as the world around you, will add another lens and give you another perspective into the world.

On the other hand, if I were to present this project to a group of dancers, I would lead with more physical examples such as getting them up and having them try pirouettes with different lengths of preparations. Other examples would include encouraging them to feel the difference in these pirouettes and why. Bottomline, I would like my audiences to learn about both physics and dance but if each audience learned one thing I’d be content. For the dancers, I would like them to walk away with an understanding of how physics is important for everything they do. For me, this project was awesome as I got to study what I love as well as further exploring the way our bodies interact with our surroundings. This project is not done as I have a lifetime of learning to add to it. This project had me feeling the same level of intrigue and curiosity as I felt when I was looking at Carthage as an option for my college experience. Working with Dr. Hasz was refreshing as I was able to talk fluently in both physics and dance topics without skipping a beat. I felt home. I am sad that this project happened in my last year of college, but maybe it happened when I was most ready for it. |
